What Is An NDIS Occupational Therapist? What Do They Do?
An NDIS Occupational Therapist (OT) helps people of all ages participate in activities important to their daily lives. These activities are known as “occupations” and can include anything from getting dressed and preparing meals to going to school, working, or engaging in hobbies and social events.
When a person is affected by injury, illness, or disability, these everyday tasks can become difficult. That’s where an OT steps in.
Occupational Therapists assess a person’s needs and environment, then work with them to build skills, introduce strategies, and recommend tools or modifications that support independence, safety, and well-being.
For further details check out OT Australia’s Website.

SIL/SDA Assessment
A SILS (Supported Independent Living) and SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) assessment, within the context of the NDIS and Occupational Therapy, is a comprehensive evaluation that focuses on an individual’s specific needs related to housing and supported living arrangements. These assessments aim to determine the level of support and accommodations required for individuals with disabilities to live independently and safely in the community.
Functional Capacity Assessment
A Functional Capacity Assessment, within the context of the NDIS and Occupational Therapy, is a comprehensive evaluation that aims to determine an individual’s current functional abilities and limitations. This assessment examines various aspects of a person’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning to determine their level of independence and support needs. The assessment considers factors such as mobility, self-care, communication, social interactions, and activities of daily living. By conducting a Functional Capacity Assessment, Occupational Therapists under the NDIS can gather valuable information to develop personalized support plans, recommend appropriate interventions, and assist individuals in maximizing their independence and participation in daily life activities.
Letter of Support
Letters of Support play a crucial role in helping individuals access appropriate Assistive Technology (AT) through the NDIS. These letters provide professional insights into a participant’s functional needs and how specific AT solutions can support greater independence, safety, and quality of life.
An OT’s letter of support for AT typically includes a clinical assessment of the individual’s strengths, limitations, and personal goals. It outlines the recommended AT devices, equipment, or modifications that are considered reasonable and necessary under NDIS criteria. The letter also explains how these supports will positively impact the participant’s daily living, social engagement, and ability to participate more fully in their community.
Occupational Therapy Assistant
An Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) works alongside an Occupational Therapist to help you achieve your daily living goals. Under the therapist’s guidance, an OTA:
Implements tailored intervention plans—such as strength, coordination, or cognitive exercises
Teaches and practices everyday tasks (dressing, meal prep, fine-motor activities)
Guides use of adaptive equipment and assistive technology
Monitors progress, documents outcomes, and adjusts activities as needed
Provides encouragement and education to you and your support network
Home Modifications
Occupational Therapy Home Modifications are changes made to your living environment to improve safety, accessibility, and independence. Guided by an Occupational Therapist, these modifications are based on your specific needs, health conditions, and daily routines.
They can include:
Installing grab rails, ramps, or handrails
Widening doorways or modifying bathrooms
Adjusting kitchen layouts or lowering benchtops
Recommending assistive technology to support mobility or self-care
At Blue Fox Health, our OTs assess your home, identify risks or barriers, and work with you to create practical solutions—so you can move around more safely and live more comfortably in your own space.
Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology (AT) Prescription is the process where an Occupational Therapist assesses a person’s needs and recommends the right tools or equipment to support their daily activities, safety, and independence.
This may include:
Mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs
Communication devices
Modified utensils for eating or dressing
Shower chairs, hoists, or bed rails
Smart home devices for easier control of lights, doors, or appliances
